Science Beyond School

Wintertime is the perfect time to take advantage of  informal science opportunities!

If I had my choice, I’d have spent my winter break on an extreme vacation frollicking with the lava lizards in the Galapagos, or rocketing to space on a private expedition. Ahh…maybe some day.

But, I am more reasonable, and thought of ways to keep us busy during the week off from school, but realizing the need to keep those little brains stimulated! Here are some of my favorite informal science experiences which keep you local, or require only a small road trip!

New York Hall of Science

1001 Inventions has come to Queens after an international tour in London and Istanbul. This featured exhibit “includes more than 60 interactive exhibits that delve into discoveries that shaped the home, school, market, hospital, town, world and universe. Visitors will learn when scientists first discovered how we see, how ancient approaches to health influence modern medicine, why East and West share so much architectural heritage, and the origins of everyday items like coffee, toothbrushes, soap, and much more.” This is truly worth the trip. (now through 4/24)
And there’s always… Marvelous Molecules, Rocket Park Mini Golf, Sports Challenge & Science Playground!

American Museum of Natural History

Journey to the Stars, a spectacular Space Show, narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg, features extraordinary images from telescopes on the ground and in space. Take a trip through time and space to learn how planets are formed and about how stars work. You will never look at the sky the same way again!
And there’s always… Journey to the Stars, Brain: The Inside Story, The Blue Whale & Dinosaurs!

Liberty Science Center

Soaring Structures gives you a scientific view of the planning, design, engineering and technology behind the creation of  some of the world’s tallest structures. Hands-on exhibits include: Soaring Structures, Wind Tunnel & Walk the Steel. Named as one of Parents Magazine’s Top 10 Best Science Museums in the Country!!
And there’s always… Mammoths & Mastodons, Energy Quest, or the Amazing IMAX Dome Theater!

Hudson River Museum

The Friendly Stars is just one of many great shows at The Hudson River Museum’s Andrus Planetarium. Each show is geared towards a different age audience and introduces kids to the stars, constellations, planets and more!
And there’s always… Paintbox Leaves

The Bronx Zoo

At Tiger Mountain, come face-to-face with Malayan and Siberian Tiger cubs as they frolick and enjoy their very first snowfall! Born just last May, the 6 cubs are a joy to watch, as they roll and play in the snow. Visit the tigers at the Bronz Zoo, and experience one of the most beautiful endangered species on Earth!
And there’s always… The Bug Carousel, Madagascar!, and Jungleworld !

Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk

Get a closer look at harbor seals Suzie, Polly, Tillie, Leila, Orange, Ariel and Rasal! During the daily harbor seal feedings, listen and watch as keepers interact with the seals and recount their stories. It’s amazing to meet each seal and understand each o their unique personalities.  Feel free to raise your hand and ask questions in an intimate setting!
And there’s always…  The Stingrays, The Happy Feet 3D Ride, The Meerkats, Touch a Shark

Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

If you never thought you’d be rich enought to hop a flight on the Concorde, now’s your chance! These scientific marvels are now retired in museums all over the world and we are lucky enough to have one right in NYC! Step inside to experience the luxury of these supersonic jets and learn about the science of flight.  The Intrepid, a  World War II aircraft carrier, features 4 different decks and over 20 different aircraft!
And there’s always…  The Growler Submarine, The Exploreum Hall & 3 different Flight Simulators!
